Time to Stop Debating SMEs Place at the Heart of UK Defence
The Government’s latest paper on the UK’s nuclear enterprise: A National Endeavour, Nuclear as Part of the Defence Engine for Growth recognises something many of us have known for years. The UK’s sovereign capability depends on an ecosystem of organisations, large and small, each providing specialist expertise that simply cannot be replicated overnight.
Time and time again we’ve heard that SMEs are vital to innovation, resilience and growth. Yet many still spend far too much time proving they deserve a seat at the table, navigating procurement processes designed around organisations many times their size, or being viewed simply as subcontractors rather than strategic partners.
We’re proud that SMI’s contribution has been recognised within this prestigious document about the national picture, but this isn’t really about us. It’s about what happens next.
A Government that genuinely wants Defence to become an engine for growth, will move the conversation beyond praising SMEs in strategy documents while making it unnecessarily difficult for them to contribute at scale. Procurement, commercial models and customer behaviour all need to catch up with the reality that specialist SMEs are already delivering critical capability to the UK’s most important national programmes.
Readiness is built through capability, and capability is built through supply chains that are diverse, resilient and innovative.
The debate is over. SMEs aren’t the future of Defence. They’re already helping deliver it. The sooner we stop treating SMEs as an optional extra, the stronger Britain’s sovereign capability will become.
